The reason we can be uncapped is the same reason we cannot offer a few things they do: there is no server. Your PDFs are read by JavaScript in the page you are looking at, combined there, and handed back as a download. No queue to ration, no storage to pay for, and nothing to leak — which matters if the thing you are merging is a contract, a payslip or a medical letter.
What merging cannot preserve, and why
A merge copies pages. It does not copy the structures that point at pages, and the most visible of those is the bookmark tree — the clickable table of contents down the side of a PDF reader. We tested this rather than assuming it: build a PDF with a real outline, merge it, read the result back, and the outline is gone. That is true of every browser-based merger using this approach, ours included, and we would rather say so than let you find out after a 200-page merge.
What does survive: the page content itself at full quality (nothing is re-encoded or re-compressed), links inside the page text, embedded fonts, and form fields as drawn. What does not: bookmarks, the document outline, and attachments held at the file level rather than on a page.
If bookmarks are the point of the document, a desktop tool is the honest answer — and it keeps the file on your machine, which a paid web service does not.
Scanned documents, in the order a scanner gives them to you
Sheet-fed scanners produce a file per batch, named scan-1.pdf … scan-10.pdf, and dragging ten rows into order is tedious on a laptop and impossible on a phone. Two things here handle it: A → Z sorts numerically, so scan-2 comes before scan-10 rather than after it, and the ▲▼ buttons on each row work on touch, which the drag handle cannot.
If a batch came out sideways, set that file's Rotate to 90° instead of re-scanning. The rotation is added to whatever the page already carried, so a page already turned 90° and set to 90° here finishes at 180°.

Yes. Each file in the list has a Pages box: leave it blank for the whole file, or type something like 1-3, 7 to take just those pages. This is the part most free mergers do not give you — iLovePDF, Smallpdf and Sejda all merge whole documents on their free tiers and put page selection behind a subscription. The running total under the list tells you how many pages the finished PDF will have before you press Merge.
Use the ▲ and ▼ buttons on each row. Dragging is a desktop-only browser feature — HTML5 drag events never fire on a touch screen — so the arrows are the reliable way on mobile, and they work on desktop too.
The originals do not survive, but the merged file is not left without any. Merging copies the pages themselves; the outline that links to them lives in a separate structure that does not come along, so a source document's own bookmarks are lost. Instead the tool builds a new outline as it merges — one bookmark per file, named after the file, pointing at the page that file starts on. Merge fifty scans and you can jump straight to any of them from your reader's sidebar. Turn it off with the checkbox if you want a plain document.

Yes, and this is worth knowing because most browser-based mergers get it wrong. A link to another page is stored as a reference to that page's object, and the copying step duplicates the target rather than pointing at the page that ended up in the merged file — so every internal link silently leads nowhere. We measured exactly that happening before fixing it. This tool records where each internal link pointed before copying and re-points it afterwards, so a table of contents or a cross-reference still works. If you used a page range that excluded the target page, the link is removed rather than left dangling. Links to websites were never affected.
Yes. This is the other thing that usually breaks: the form fields on a page are separate objects from the page, and a plain merge copies the visible boxes while leaving the form's field list behind — so the merged file looks like a form and cannot be typed into. We measured a merged form coming back with zero usable fields. The tool now re-registers every field it copies. If two files both contain a field with the same name, the second is renamed after its source file, because otherwise every PDF reader treats them as one field and typing in one fills the other.
The source documents' own bookmarks, their metadata such as title and author, and any attachments or JavaScript. Page content, fonts, vector graphics, images, form fields, website links and internal links all come through. Digital signatures are also invalidated by merging, which is true of every merge tool — a signature covers a specific document, and the merged file is a different document.
