MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI · short clips work best · nothing uploaded

Convertlo is a free online video compressor for MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI. Choose a quality level or a target size, then check the finished MP4 before sharing. Nothing is uploaded and the result has no watermark.

Is this video compressor free?
Yes. You can compress one clip at a time with no signup or watermark.
Is the video uploaded?
No. Compression runs in the browser on your device. The encoder may need a network download.
Can I set a maximum file size?
Yes. Choose To a file size and keep Enforce upload limit checked. The tool compares the finished MP4 with the exact byte cap before offering it to download.
Can I compress an MP4?
Yes. Choose an MP4 or another supported video and download the result in MP4 format.
Can I keep the original resolution?
Yes. Keep Original and start with Light or Balanced if you want to preserve more detail.

How to compress a video online

  1. Choose a video. Select one video from your device. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI are accepted when the browser or fallback can decode the file.
  2. Choose quality or a size target. Start with Balanced for a smaller MP4, or choose To a file size and enter your limit. Select 720p or 480p if you need a smaller frame.
  3. Compress and check the result. Click Compress video. Check the actual output size, then open the comparison to play the original and compressed video before downloading.

The tool tries WebCodecs, then a MediaRecorder-based real-time encoder, then FFmpeg in WebAssembly. Browser support and clip length affect speed. The software path can download its encoder before starting.

Compress a video to 10 MB, 25 MB or a custom target

Choose To a file size and pick 10 MB, 20 MB, 25 MB or another target. The estimate uses your clip length and reserves space for audio and the MP4 container. If a pass is too large, the encoder can retry at a lower bitrate.

Enforce upload limit is on by default in size mode. It counts 1,000,000 bytes per MB and offers a download only when the finished MP4 fits. If it still exceeds the cap, shorten the clip, lower the resolution or remove audio. Uncheck the option for the previous binary target scale (1,048,576 bytes per displayed MB) and the option to download an over-target result.

Compress video for Discord, WhatsApp or email

WhereWhat to checkHow to start
DiscordDiscord documents 20 MB for non-Nitro users and mentions experiments. Check your account.Try a 10 MB target if you need a smaller file, or set a target below the cap you see.
WhatsAppCheck the limit for sending as a video or a document.Choose a target below the cap for the send method you’ll use.
EmailPersonal Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments. Other providers and work accounts can differ.Leave room for other attachments. Check the finished file before sending.

Reduce video file size while keeping detail

Try Light with Original resolution when detail matters. Balanced is a starting point for sharing. Strong and Extreme can reduce detail, especially on fast motion, small text and textured backgrounds.

Lower the resolution to 720p or 480p when you have a tight limit. Shorten unused footage with the video trimmer or remove audio if you don’t need it. Compare the actual size and play the result before sending.

Measured compression examples

We encoded three synthetic 8-second MP4 clips in Chromium using this tool’s FFmpeg software fallback. The table reports the actual downloaded bytes. These results depend on the source clip and encoder.

Compress video without uploading it

Your video is processed in the browser and the MP4 is created on your device. The page, analytics and ads can use the network, and the software encoder can require a download.

For long clips, a desktop encoder such as HandBrake can give you more control over codecs and rate settings. This tool is for quick browser compression with quality and target-size controls.

Frequently asked questions

Choose To a file size, select a preset or enter a custom limit, then compress. Enforce upload limit compares the finished MP4 with the exact byte cap. If it is over, try a shorter clip, lower resolution or less audio.
Add a clip, choose To a file size and select 10 MB or 25 MB. Enforce upload limit uses 1,000,000 bytes per MB. Check the limit for the service and account you plan to use before choosing a target.
Savings depend on duration, content, resolution and the source bitrate. A clip that has already been compressed may shrink very little at the same resolution. Check the estimate and compare the actual result.
Re-encoding can change visual detail. Start with Light and the original resolution to prioritise quality. For a tighter target, trim the clip first or lower the resolution and inspect the output.
No. Compression runs in your browser. The site can download the encoder and other page resources, but the compression workflow does not send your video to a conversion server.
Check the upload limit shown for your Discord account, then choose a target below it. Discord documents 20 MB for non-Nitro users and says it experiments with different limits. Play the result before sharing.
Short clips are easier to compress on phones and laptops. Available memory, browser support and the video’s codec affect which files can finish. Trim a long clip into a smaller segment if it stalls.
The picker accepts MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and M4V. The codec inside the file still matters. If your browser cannot decode it, the tool can try a software fallback for supported codecs.
The tool exports MP4 with H.264 video. When the selected encoder can include sound, it uses AAC audio. You can remove the audio track when you need a smaller silent clip.
Time varies by clip length, device and encoder. The fast path uses WebCodecs when available, the real-time path follows playback, and the software fallback can take longer.
The tool tries WebCodecs first. It can fall back to a MediaRecorder-based path or FFmpeg running in WebAssembly. The engine note under the compression controls describes the path.
Try Compress more, select 720p or 480p, or trim unused footage with the video trimmer. If sound is optional, remove the audio track. Check the actual output before attaching it.
Try a short video in a current mobile browser. Codec support and memory vary by device, and longer clips can be slow. Keep the tab open and use 720p or a shorter clip if needed.
Check the size limit for the send method and account you plan to use. Aim below that limit, verify the result and attach the downloaded MP4. Use a shorter clip if the file still exceeds the cap.
Yes. The page and any required software encoder load over the network. Once loaded, the encoding runs on the device without uploading the clip to a conversion server.
This tool processes one video at a time. Download your result, then choose a different video. For long footage, trim the part you want to share before compressing it.
