What is inside the .docx
A .docx is a zip of XML parts, and what makes one pleasant to edit is structure, not appearance. The Editable mode writes real structure: headings use Word’s Heading 1–3 styles, so the navigation pane and a table of contents work; lists use Word numbering, so they renumber as you edit; tables are Word tables with their borders and shading; repeating page headers and footers go into Word’s header and footer, not into the body; links stay clickable.
Each PDF page becomes its own Word section with the page’s own size and orientation, so a landscape page stays landscape. Pictures are embedded at the size they appear. Fonts are named the way Word knows them (Calibri stays Calibri, Liberation Sans becomes Arial), and a popular free font such as Montserrat or Roboto is embedded in the file itself, so Word shows it even where it is not installed.
The file opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Apple Pages. It is a .docx, not the older binary .doc; every version of Word since 2007 opens it, and Word 2003 needs Microsoft’s free compatibility pack.
Editable, exact or best quality
Editable text (the default) writes the structure described above for pages of plain text, and keeps every line of a page with tables, columns, a form or a designed layout exactly where the PDF has it, still as editable text — so the .docx has the same number of pages as the PDF. Exact visual layout puts each page in as a picture: identical to the PDF, not editable. Alternative engine runs pdf2docx (about 40 MB the first time) if you want to compare. Pages converts part of the file, e.g. 1-3, 7.
Scanned PDFs are read with OCR
A scanned page has no text inside it, so it is read with OCR on your device and written into the .docx as editable text — the scan is not pasted in behind it. Choose the scan’s language in the box that appears (35 languages); the first scan downloads about 7 MB. On a clean 200 dpi scan about 9 words in 10 came back exactly in our test, so check names and numbers.
